Jewish Savior
#8—Schindler’s List
The year of 1993 was an amazing year for director Steven Speilburg.
Speilburg had two groundbreaking films come out that year. The first was the
adaptation of Jurassic Park. In this film,
Speilburg brought dinosaurs to life with breath taking special effects. The
second film that year has fewer dinosaurs and more Nazis.
Schindler’s List is a gut wrenching story of a pro-Nazi businessman
who had the idea: instead of killing off the Jewish people, put them to work.
At first this is a strictly business decision, but as Schindler spends more
time around these ‘Jews’ he starts to realize that these are human beings.
To me, this is the most rounded film on this list so far. Everything
from the direction to the acting, the film is astounding on every level. Spielberg
uses the camera to show to the dominance of the Nazis over the Jewish people in
the beginning with many low angle shots. Speilburg slowly uses higher angle
shots to show how Schindler starts to feel on the same level as his friends. Liam
Neeson plays Oskar Schindler beautifully. However, I think the best performance
in this film comes from Ralph Fiennes. Fiennes portrays Amon Goeth, a cruel Nazi
‘captain’. The depth of hate Fiennes admits is truly incredible.
This film is one of the greatest portrayals of human
strength ever to be told. Schindler’s
List is Speilburgs masterpiece and one that will be tied to his legacy.
Verdict: Please see
this film if you have not already.
