Diary Entry #9

Diary Entry #9

Happy Thursday everyone, welcome to another Diary Entry. Recapping from last week, we talked about worthless sequels, directors being found for an X-character, and a fantasy novel finding its live-action home on the small screen. This week we have some big news and one tragic loss. I have also decided to add a little history to my Diary Entries, please let me know what you think. So please come on this journey with me and ‘Let’s Do This!’

TV News: Well it looks like this week I will start off again with some TV news. This week it is not about a show finding a home, but a show losing a home. NBC has officially cancelled the gruesome TV life of fictional serial killer Hannibal. The show that stars Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) and Hugh Dancy (Confessions of a Shopaholic) has been critically acclaimed from the beginning but could never really find its audience. However, there are rumors going around that executive producer Bryan Fuller is having ongoing discussions with Netfilx and Amazon to bring the series to one of their respective online streaming services. This last part needs to get done. This is an amazing show that needs to find a better home. I never thought that the show would survive on NBC and if it can find a new home, I’m sure that it will strive quite well.

Casting News: Slow to get going on casting and filming, the long awaited big screen adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game Assassin’s Creed has found a new actress to star next to Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past). Ariane Labed (Before Midnight) is the lucky actress to be brought on board the December 2016 release. Though her role hasn’t been defined, I am going to assume that she is going to be a key figure in the past. I am stoked about this movie due to my extreme love for the game. I hope that they will take great care of this movie because if not, I will never trust a video game adaption again!

Director News: With the much warranted  success of 20th Century Fox’s big screen adaption of John Green’s teen love novel, The Fault in Our Stars, Paramount Studios has decided to move forward with their adaption of one of Green’s other novels, Looking for Alaska. The love story for Paramount will be helmed by Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children), who seems to have the author very excited due to his tweet on June 25th. Not really sure how to take this one, Thomas seems to be an indie-type director and could bring some of that feel to the movie. I think that will work in the film’s favor because it isn’t supposed to be a grand spectacle of a novel, so they will do well if they keep this film low key as well.

Spider-Man News: Well everyone, it seems that Marvel and Sony have found their new Spider-Man! Tom Holland (The Impossible) has been cast as the web-slinger that is supposed to bring Spidey back to the early years of high school. Along with this announcement, Marvel and Sony also announced that Jon Watts (Cop Car) will direct the newest and first movie under the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though I am not familiar with either of these gentlemen, I am still very excited. Not only is it going to be Peter Parker, Sony and Marvel has found some unknowns to lead this ‘reboot/remake’. Hopefully this means that Spidey will poke his head into Captain America: Civil War.

In Memoriam: I hate doing these but I feel the need to pay respect to these Hollywood greats. Legendary film composer James Horner (Braveheart, Titanic) has passed away last week. Horner has been about of many magnificent Hollywood productions over the years and has made some very memorable musical themes. I, in particular, loved his work in Braveheart due to his ability to mix Celtic music and classical music together. I know that I am quite ignorant when it comes to composing, but I do know that Horner created some timeless composition. Thank you Mr. Horner for all the beauty that you created, you will be forever missed.

This Week’s History Lesson:

June 20, 1974: American Film Institute Top 100 #21 film Chinatown was released.

June 20, 2006: Home video is changed forever! The first Blu-Ray movies were released (all Sony features, but one).

June 21, 1975: Bruce attacks! On this date Steven Spielberg became a household name when he scared many people away from the beaches. #56 on the AFI list, Jaws was released today in 1975.

June 22, 1969: On this day in 1969, Judy Garland (A Star is Born) finally went home to ‘Kansas’. The singer/actress was found dead in her home from an apparent overdose. She will always be immortalized as the lost girl from Kansas in the strange land of OZ.

June 23, 1989: The campiness of the 1960’s TV series was erased today with Tim Burton’s (Big Eyes) big screen adaptation of Batman. Starring Michael Keaton (Birdman) as the title character, this version of Batman was very dark and gothic.

June 25, 1963: Due to the boisterous acclaim by the creators of Academy Award winning The Longest Day of how historically accurate their film is the NAACP speaks up about how false that is. According to the NAACP, the producers forget the 1,700 African-American soldiers that bravely served their country on D-Day.
