Diary Entry #3

Diary Entry #3

Last week's Journal Entry covered a small tribute to Leonard Nimoy and covered some actor/director news. This week was a little slow, news wise, but we were able to gather a few juicy tidbits on a couple of Disney films, some new Ghostbusters news, and a first look at a DC character developing for CBS. Sadly, we also give another in memoriam to a producer that changed the landscape of television forever. Here we go!

Filming News: It was reported this week that filming for Disney's Tron 3 is set to begin this fall in Vancouver. According to this report, Joseph Kosinski and Garrett Hedlund are set to return as director and star respectively. Hedlund stared in Tron: Legacy as Sam Flynn and the film is rumored to pick up right where Legacy left off. I personally thought that Legacy was a great movie. The film was extremely visually engrossing and I am excited to see where this franchise goes. I do hope that Olivia Wilde returns as well because she became an awesome addition.

Director News: Going along with the Disney news above, the mega-company has hired Tim Burton (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) to direct a live-action version of the beloved animated classic Dumbo. I just wonder if Dumbo is the right animated classic for Burton to direct. Burton was marvelous with Alice in Wonderland, but that kind of twisted story is right up Burton's ally. Dumbo is a sweet elephant just trying to belong. Of course as a kid, Dumbo's drunken dream did give me some nightmares but I don't think that should justify Burton twisting this innocent tale. Maybe someone else could be better like John Lassiter (Toy Story) or James Bobin (The Muppets). Mr. Burton, let's lay off the weird and keep Dumbo grounded please!

Ghostbusters News: Well it seems that the Ghostbusters are going to have their own expanded universe. Recently, the all-female cast of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters was revealed with a release date of July 2016. Now it seems that the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier) have been in talks with Dan Aykroyd about expanding on Feig's idea. The directors have also been in conversations with Channing Tatum (22 Jump St) about staring in their Ghostbusters film. The film would take place within the world of Feig's film and have a projected release date sometime in 2017. Ummm...okay? I don't really understand why we need to expand on this, but I am sure I am among a small group that thinks that this is a bad idea. I just pray for Sony's sake that this works and doesn't fail horribly because if it does, the Ghostbusters legacy will go down in flames and I, among a lot of other Ghostbusters fans, will be very upset.

First Look: Warner Bros TV has released the first images of Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee) as Supergirl. By the looks of the picture, the costume seems to be a slight throwback to Supergirl's original costume. I, personally, don't like it. I would have hoped that they would have gotten rid of the mini-skirt and boots. I don't understand what the need is for female super-heroes in the DC universe to have high-heel boots. Plus can we give Supergirl a little more dignity and get rid of the skirt! They got rid of Superman’s red underwear (over wear?), so I think we could have done without the red mini-skirt.

In Memoriam:  The TV world has sadly lost one of the greats this week. On March 8th, Sam Simon passed away from cancer. Simon is best known for bringing The Simpsons to TV. Though The Simpsons were only one of the many great things Simon did. Simon also wrote some classic episodes for Taxi and The Tracey Ullman Show. I know that last week I started with a small tribute to Leonard Nimoy, but I feel that I should finish with memorials from now on so that we can remember those who have passed and the amazing things they have done for this industry. Simon was an amazing contributor to not only TV, but to animal rights as well. I guess Bart will be writing a single line on that chalkboard one more time. Good-bye Mr. Simon, thank you for The Simpsons.

Thanks for readying everyone, stay tuned for next week’s Diary Entry
