Diary Entry #2
Welcome everyone to another Diary Entry. Last week I gave a few opinions about some casting
news and a couple reboots in the works for TV and for film. This week has some
of the same news, but also a small memoriam to a beloved actor.
In Memoriam:
On February 27, 2015 the world lost an icon within the science fiction
community. Leonard Nimoy passed away
at the age of 83. Nimoy will be best remembered as Spock from Star Trek.
Nimoy's role as Spock spanned from the original 60s TV series to multiple
films. To me it is bittersweet that Nimoy will only be remembered for his role
within the Star Trek universe, but he
was loved no matter what. Rest in peace Mr. Nimoy, we will try and live long
and prosper.
Director News:
Rumors are flying around Hollywood that Cabin
in the Woods director, Drew Goddard,
is in talks to direct the new Spider-Man
reboot. Goddard was previously attached to the Sinister Six project with Sony,
but that went out the window when Sony decided to reboot it's super-hero
franchise...yet again. I have no reservations about this. Goddard did a great
job with Cabin and has worked closely
with Joss Whedon (The
Avengers) on various things like Buffy
the Vampire Slayer. Remember when everyone was hesitant about Whedon
directing The Avengers? And remember
how awesome the movie turned out? Another fanboy (Goddard) directing a super-hero movie.
Casting and
Director News: It has been confirmed that Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick
Deckard in a sequel to the 1982 sci-fi hit, Blade Runner. Reports have also stated that Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) is set to direct the sequel
due out in 2017. I'm not sure about Ford coming back for this. Ford has aged a
lot and not as spry as he used to be. I know I'm going to be labeled a
hypocrite for this, but I think the filmmakers should have found someone to
replace Ford has Deckard or better yet left the whole thing alone to begin
with. Blade Runner is a sci-fi
masterpiece that doesn't call for a sequel. As far as the directing news,
Villeneuve is a magnificent choice for this film. Villeneuve did a remarkable
job with Prisoners and he is a
dark/gritty director that will give the audience a great character driven film
as well as a special effects marvel.
TV News:
This week, ABC announced that it is bringing
John Hughes' comedic classic Uncle Buck to prime time TV. Not only
are they bringing it back to TV, but they have found an actor to take up the
title role. Mike Epps (Next Friday) has been hired to bring the
clumsy bachelor to the small screen. Why?! Why in the world do we as
intellegent human beings need to be
subjected to this? Uncle Buck does
not need a TV show as evident in 1990 when CBS
tried and horrifically failed to make this film into a weekly sitcom. On
top of that the film itself is not setup to be a weekly thing. The movie shows
a man asked to babysit his nieces and nephew for a couple days while the
parents are out of town. To make this a weekly show Buck would have to take
care of the kids because something g tragic happened to the parents. Please
ABC, I implore you, do not ruin this movie! Please!
Everyone stay tuned next Thursday for some more updates.
Thank you!
