Guys...We Have All Been There, Am I Right?
Don Jon
I am going to admit my guilty pleasure for all of you. I
actually like some romantic comedies. Now, Jennifer Lopez films I can’t stand
and rather see her slip away into the background. I’m talking about films like Love Actually, Serendipity, and P.S I Love
You. The thought of love and romance
really being that way is definitely for the movies because we all know that
love is nothing like that. Especially from the guy’s point of view.
That’s where Don Jon
comes in. Jon is a Jersey Shore type
guy. He loves his family, he loves working out, and he loves his porn. However,
because he loves his porn so much, the sex that he has with the many different
women on a weekly basis doesn’t compare. Even when he meets Barbara, a perfect
ten in his eyes, the satisfaction that he feels with porn is not being met.
This film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who also directed the
film), Scarlett Johansson, and Julianne
Moore. While all three of these actors does an admirable job, I just can’t see
this much of a stretch in any of their acting skills. Besides Gordon-Levitt and
Johansson acquiring very heavy Jersey accents, the acting in this film was what
you expect.
Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut is a very good start.
Especially if he continues with the low budget indie films like this one. Again
though, like his acting, this film is just not going to jump off the page to
anyone.
The subject material of the film is what I found most
appealing. I just think that this film is about as realistic as you are going
to get when it comes to a romantic comedy. This film was just a little
confusing to critique because its not a bad movie, nor is it great. There are
no layers to the film, it is just a very to the point film and its over before
you know it.
Verdict: Watch On
Cable.
