How Many Geniuses Does It Take To...
Scorpion
For the past eight years CBS has
given TV audiences a reason to love geniuses. The Big Bang Theory has shown that being a nerd/genius isn’t a bad
thing. So the popular network has decided to expand on the amount of
genius-type shows, but this time the geniuses are saving lives in the new show Scorpion.
In the pilot episode of Scorpion, Los Angeles International
Airport’s (LAX) control tower is hacked which causes the airport to lose
contact with 50+ planes still in the air circling the city. Out of options,
Homeland Security hires a team of geniuses to figure out how to restore
communications with the planes and potentially save hundreds of lives.
After watching the premiere, I
wasn’t really sure how I felt about the show. During the episode the team was
on a time crunch, so understandably the whole show was rushed. The downfall to
this is that you really don’t get to know the characters. Of course little bits
of each personality are given, but just enough to mesh with the story. I can
say that the premise of a foursome of geniuses saving the world each week is
quite intriguing and the episode was , in fact, exciting and because of this, I
will keep watching…for now.
Scorpion centers around Walter O’Brian (Elyes Gabel Game of Thrones), a computer expert, and
his team which consists of a human calculator ( Ari Stidham The Crazy Ones), an electrical engineer
(Jadyn Wong Cosmopolis), and a
psychologist (Eddie Kaye Thomas American
Pie series). Now as I said before
the episode was rushed so I wasn’t given a good chance to really critique the
acting of any of the supporting characters. Gabel, however, is the only one on
screen long enough to get a read of his character. I can say that Gabel was
decent and I hope the writers develop him better than the characters’ first
impression.
I’m going to give the show at
least 4 episodes to really hook me. However, if the show is going to be like
the first episode, no amount of geniuses will be able to save it.
The Verdict: Give It 4 Episodes.
