Diary Entry #5

Diary Entry #5

First and foremost, I would like to apologize to all of my loyal readers for the delay on this week and last week’s Diary Entry. So to make up for it, I am going to double up on this week’s Entry. Lot of random stuff over the last two weeks, like more Disney live action films, Arrow star joining Turtles, and FOX reviving and oldie, but goodie TV show. Here we go!

TV News: For all of you supernatural/extraterrestrial fans out there, FOX has announced that they are bringing back one their most popular shows ever. The X-Files, which starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, was one of the most culturally impactful shows in the 90s. The show will return for a measly six episode arc with, at least, Duchovny returning to the cast. I am so sorry, but if Chris Carter and David Duchovny are only bringing the show back for six episodes...then why not just make another movie? To me that seems like a waste of time and money. This show still has a humungous fan base and I am sure a true revival of the show will garner more fans if they brought the show back properly. I agree that TV seasons lasting 22-24 episodes are getting a bit much, so doing a 10-13 episode season would be perfect for this show. I just think that Carter and Duchovny would be better off just filming a third movie, instead of a VERY limited return to the small screen.

Casting News: X-Men: Apocalypse has seen another student check in at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Lana Candor will be playing Jubilee in her very first major film role. Jubilee has been featured in the first three X-Movies only in cameos, so it will be very interesting to see how she is going to be utilized in the upcoming movie.  My only concern is that this film is supposed to be set in the 1980s and according to the timeline from the first films, Jubilee wouldn’t even been born yet. You know what though, I have faith in director Bryan Singer, he has done amazing things with the X-Men franchise and gave the world an outstanding movie last year with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Bring on the ‘fireworks’.

More Casting News: It seems that the Suicide Squad has enlisted another member to its ranks. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (LOST) has been cast as Batman villain Killer Croc. Not sure how much of Croc we will see or what his role will be in Squad, but I can tell you this…This will be awesome. For the first time we will see Croc in live-action. Croc has a lot of brute force that challenges Batman many times. I am just praying that the writers and/or director do not use Croc as some sideshow freak. Obviously if you are hiring an established actor, you have some sort of storyline in place for him. Use him to the best of his potential.

Even More Casting News: It has been confirmed by the actor himself that Stephen Amell (Arrow) will be donning the iconic hockey mask of Casey Jones in the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  This is a great choice for Jones, but I am also afraid for Amell being type-cast as another masked vigilante. Amell has shown some great acting skills (this is not me being bias either) on Arrow and I think that he will fit in just right with the atmosphere created within the first film. Mr. Amell, if you are reading this…have fun with the Turtles; just don’t let them ruin the beginning of your amazing career with type-casting!

Director News: According to multiple reports, director Sam Taylor-Johnson will NOT be returning to the director’s chair for the Fifty Shades sequel.  Many sources close to the project have stated that Taylor-Johnson had been looking for a way out due to supposed arguments she had with author E.L. James about a variety of things during production of the first film. I actually thought that Taylor-Johnson did a magnificent job of creating a movie that felt more about the characters, than the infamous sex scenes from the novel. Universal Studios needs to find a director that can achieve the same with the sequel. Prove to people that these books are not only about sex, but about the characters themselves. Just one suggestion to Universal…do not hire a popular director. Find a director with Independent film experience. They have a better sense of bringing out the characters than most popular film directors.

Disney News: Let the live-action remakes continue for Disney. This week it was announced that, not one, but TWO classic Disney animated movies will be turned into live action films. First it was said that Asian hero Mulan will grace the big screen. If done right, this film could be amazing. Let us make up an amazing Asian cast and bring to life a great story. This will only work if the ENTIRE cast is Asian. It is their heritage; let’s show them that we respect it. Second film to get a live-action treatment is Winnie the Pooh. I’m not too sure why we need all of these remakes. Has Disney run out of original ideas, so they turn to the stories they already adapted to make, what for it…ANOTHER ADAPTATION! I don’t get that at all. I know I sound like I am contradicting myself right now because of my earlier Mulan comments, but I don’t think that needs to be re-adapted either. Disney is remaking these to make money and we, the audience collectively, will eat it up and shell over our hard earned money for a movie that we have already scene.

Thank you and stay tuned for next week’s Diary Entry!!
